The Bux-Mont Legion Championship game between Doylestown and Hatfield at Quakertown Blazers Stadium has been played and I have yet to see the all-league teams and MVP for the summer of 2012. First, congratulations to Doylestown. Second, before the coaches' choices are announced, I thought I'd give you my feelings according to what I saw on the diamond over the last few months. This is soley one man's opinion, based on what I have seen and read.
Player of the Year: P/1B - Jared Schaffer (Pennridge) - After going through the process of preparing to help Bloomsburg's baseball program in the future the seldomly-used Huskie returned to his hometown and put his rested right arm to use. When Schaffer was not twirling 100 plus pitches of excellence, the former Suburban One MVP also produced in the middle of Post 255's lineup. Schaffer's combination of offense and pitching makes him a strong choice for player of the year in a league loaded with talent. Schaffer is workhorse in every way and Bloomsburg is lucky have him on their roster for three more seasons. Pennridge is going to miss one of the main cogs in back-to-back league titles.
P/1B - Marty Martens (Doylestown)
P/2B - Bryce Mengel (Hatfield)
P - Blair Killough (Plumstead)
C - Mike Kacergis (Pennridge)
2B - Scott Giuliano (Souderton) - Pitchers like Dan O'Hara stepped up down the stretch, but Souderton spent most of the summer as the team to beat because of their offense. Giuliano not only got on base close to 60 percent of the time, but played sound defense. Only his double play partner Grzywacz drove in more runs and only lead off hitter Wenger score more runs.
SS - Ryan Grzywacz (Souderon)
OF - Kyle Wenger (Souderton)
OF - Brady West (Hatfield)
OF - Danny Shane (Pennridge)
OF - Ryan Clow (Doylestown) - While pitching was praised all season long, it was Clow that anchored down the defense in center field and supplied the scoring chances. His mixture of power, speed, and patience at the plate made the C.B. East grad one of the toughest outs in the league. Without Clow, who also closed out games on the mound, was a big reason the Tigers took home the regular season and tournament titles.
