GAME OF THE WEEK: Lansdale Catholic 64, Wissahickon 61 (2 OTs) - Looking for answers at the half, the Crusaders realized they had a weapon in Jim Rock. By getting the "rock" to Rock they were able to upend the Trojans on their own floor, in their own tournament. It took Rock scoring 16 of his 19 points in the second half, which included two overtime periods, but eventually the Crusaders held on.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Pat Smith (Archbishop Wood) - Most importanly the Vikings left New Jersey with a pair of wins. But in the showcase tournament nobody showcased themseves better than the sharpshooting 6-foot-5 junior did. Smith hit eight three-pointers on his way to 42 points, which was one better than Joe Getz' mark for the school record.

High School Hoops: 12/19-12/21 Scores & Scoring Leaders

GAME OF THE WEEK: Abington Friends 59, Academy New Church 57 (2 OTs) - It nearly slipped away. The Roos built up a small halftime lead over the Lions and led most of the way. But the Lions caught them in the the fourth quarter behind the 18 points from Darryl Bryant. But junior Jordan Greene was there save the game for the Roos, not once, not twice, but three times. Crucial buckets in overtime and a total of 14 points helped the Friends' League squad squeak out a win.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Kareem Boyd (Pottsgrove) - The Falcons are happy to have Boyd back in the fold. After missing a handful of games the senior is starting to settle into the starting lineup. Make it back-to-back to games for the 5-10 guard with over 20 points in wins. Boyd dropped 24 against crosstown rival Pottstown. With the senior starting to score with ease the Falcons could be a sleeper for league title contention.

GAME OF THE WEEK: Bristol 44, Lower Moreland 42 - After three quarters of a back-and-forth affair between the Lions and the Warriors it was anything but decided. In fact, it was not decided until the final seconds. Behind Lions' Joe Leventhal's 13 points the Lions held the lead with under 10 seconds, however Bristol's Ryan Rigby hit both foul shots with three seconds left and blocked a shot on the other end to seal the win.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Brendan Casper (Methacton) - The senior kept the defending PAC-10 champs perfect in the league with a dazzling 30 point game against the Vikings of Perkiomen Valley on Tuesday. The Warriors are playing with confidence and Casper is the man in charge. The team goes as he goes, and lately, his has been going strong. Casper is averaging a double-double and is the type of player teams need to make a run in the district playoffs. Do not forget his friendly name come postseason time.

High School Hoops: 12/14-12/15 Scores and Scoring Leaders

GAME OF THE WEEK: Plymouth-Whitemarsh 56, Archbishop Wood 54 - It was the Vikings' well-oiled defense versus the Colonials' point guard Anthony McKie. Even though at times it had the feel of all Catholic League, McKie continued to keep it close. With the whistles of the refs blowing constantly it came down to free throws and the clutch gene. The Vikings missed 13 free throws and McKie was 10-for-10 and scored 33 points, including the game winner in double overtime. READ THE GAME STORY

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Zach Quattro (Hatboro-Horsham) - A lot of the attention, and rightfully so, has blown in the direction of Navy recruit Mike Brown. But without a partner in crime the Hatters would not be 4-1. Quattro has grown up quickly on both ends. On Saturday he helped the team win with 15 rebounds and six blocks. He only scored eight points against Perk Valley, but prior to that he had three consecutive games with more than 20 points, including 26 points against Carlisle.

High School Hoops: 12/9-12/13 Scores and Scoring Leaders

By Andrew Marcus

GAME OF THE WEEK: Central Bucks East 51, Wissahickon 50 - The Patriots took a one point lead into the half, but the Trojans returned the floor in the third and looked like they had righted the ship for good. Behind Chris Vila (15 pts), Todd Bentley (14 pts), and Chase Wilson (10 pts) the Trojans took the largest lead of the night only to see it slip away. The Patriots' Kyle Clow helped force overtime where they were able to come out of the non-league game with the one point win. The Patriots' Bennett Kardane scored 13 of his 19 points in the first quarter.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Kyle Pavlik (Lansdale Catholic) - It has been a pretty great six days of basketball for the Crusaders. Three non-league games and three wins where they really had to work for it and finish off the game strong. Pavlik has averaged double-digits in that span, including 19 points in the 44-42 comeback against Upper Moreland last Tuesday. Pavlik will need to continue to be a scorer for the Crusaders if they want the same type success in the Philadelphia Catholic League.

High School Hoops: Opening Week Scores and Scoring Leaders

By Andrew Marcus

GAME OF THE WEEK: Norristown  64, Coatesville 59 - The Eagles showed last year's late emergence, which saw them grace the state playoffs, was no fluke. On Saturday facing the Red Raiders in the host team own's tournament the Suburban One team toughed it out. Maybe Coatesville was slightly focused on their recent football success and missing some players that will play for a state title next week, but behind Luke Kelly'w 24 points the Eagles definitely displayed their depth and clear cut status as one of the top team's in the area.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Anthony Durham (Abington) - The player of the week was clearly going to come out of the Abington Tip-Off Tournament. If Archbishop Wood would have won Pat Smith and his 57 points in two games was special, but not enough to take first place. After 17 points in the opener against Wissahickon, senior point guard Anthony Durham dropped 26 to improve to a strong 2-0 against two of the strongest teams in the area. Durham's ability to create for teammates and finish himself makes he and his Ghosts a dangerous group.

Boys Basketball: Pre-Season Predictions and Top Players

By Andrew Marcus

Welcome to the wonderful world of winter sports. Where it's cold outside and the games are indoors. I love football, but I am thankful this Holiday Season for no more standing on the sidelines while I lose the feeling in fingers.

High School Basketball, in my opinion, is at its best in and around this area. Teams from Montgomery Media's coverage area always seem to be in the mix for district and even state championships. There are always a handful of players that commit to Division-One schools and more than you can count that go one to play Division Two and Three.

So without further adieu... Here is one man's opinion on the best teams and the best players in Montgomery Media's coverage area prior to the 2012-2013 season starts.

Check back to this blog all season for stats and scores. Go to www.montgomerynews.com/sports for stories everyday.

Montgomery Media'a Top 10 Pre-Season Teams
1. Germantown Academy Patriots - A Division-1 point guard (Nick Lindner - Lafayette) and D-1 center (Julian Moore -Penn State) and everything in between. The Patriots have nine seniors all with the same unselfish goals. The Inter-Ac is full of talent, so a league championship will be no cake walk, but this group has the potential to be the powerhouse.

2. LaSalle Explorers - You will notice in boys' basketball how crucial having a strong point guard is and that is true with Explorers and Amar Stukes (LaSalle University recruit). The Explorers are deep, experienced, and motivated to win a championship this season.

3. Abington Friends Roos - The Roos have one of the more balanced attacks you will find. They can score against all defensive sets and from all spots on the floor. Montana Mayfield and Jordan Greene are strong off the dribble and Jeremiah Batts is force down. The Roos should be a force in the Friends' League this season.

4. Archbishop Wood Vikings - The Vikings matured quickly last season as some strong players grew up and emerged as leaders vocally and with their efforts on the court. A lot of the same faces are back and they should be a threat to go deep in the postseason.

5. Abington Galloping Ghosts - They were not on many people's radar heading into last year, but after their state playoff appearance last season everybody knows their name. Led by Anthony Durham and handful of quick, aggressive players, the Ghost should challenge for a SOL National Conference title and maybe more.

6. Academy of the New Church Lions  - It seems as though the Lions continue to churn out some of the best players in the area. And while the likes of Rakeem Christmas (Syracuse) and the Gilbert brothers are long gone, under the tutelage of coach Kevin Givens this team will once again be tough to top.

7. Plymouth-Whitemarsh Colonials - It was a down year as far as coach Jim Donofrio is concerned, yet they still made the District One tournament. Anthony McKie returns as the conductor of the Colonial offense and should be able to have few insane scoring days on the floor and lead the Colonials to another postseason appearance.

8. Spring-Ford Rams - The Rams have a chance to be the surprise team in the District One field in my opinion. The weaker Pac-10 may force them to have a lower seed than preferred, but Zameer McDowell is a dominant post presence they has the ability to put the team on his back on any given night. Just look back to the 44 point game he had last season as Exhibit A.

9. Wissahickon Trojans - The big man Tonah Kpassagnon is gone and Jordan Reed is already averaging a double-double at Binghampton, but the experience the returning starters got last year should be enough to remain one of the top team's in the area. Coaches' son Chase Wilson is not getting any special treatment. He is one of the best ball handlers in the area and this year will have a chance to average over 15 points if he so desires.

10. Hatboro-Horsham Hatters - This group has taken its lumps over the last few years, but I believe this off-season they might have matured enough to sneak up on a few people, win the SOL Continental Conference, and win a game or two in districts. If Zach Quattro can become stronger on the glass, Mike Brown (Navy recruit) is probably the best all-around player in the Continental Conference.

Other possible title contenders: Cheltenham, Norristown, Bishop McDevitt, Upper Dublin, William Tennent, Souderton, Methacton, Pennridge, Pope John Paul II, North Penn

Girls Basketball: Pre-Season Predictions and Top Players

Montgomery Media'a Top 10 Pre-Season Teams
1. Archbishop Wood Vikings - I think it is safe to call the Vikings a dynasty, and if it's not, it would definitely be if Jim Ricci can make it four consecutive years as Class 3A state champs. Led by Jackie Pierson, who is fresh of her state championship appearance in girls' soccer, the Vikes have enough talent to tear the nets down again.

2. Germantown Academy Patriots - Led by Dempsey Cooper (Rhode Island) and Kiernan McCloskey (Lehigh) the Patriots have a strong chance to make it 15 straight Inter-Ac championships. Quite an accomplishment and I could only imagine what they would do in the PIAA.

3. Mount St. Joseph Magic - Year in and year out the Magic play some of the best team defense you will see in Montgomery Media's coverage area and beyond. Junior Alex Louin will be the focal point on offense.

4. North Penn Maidens - With the return of Lauren Crisler (American) and a ton of girls who played valuable minutes on their deep playoff run a season ago, the Maidens should be able to make a similar run this season. Even without Stepk Knauer, who is already succeeding at Shippensburg.

5. Spring-Ford Rams - The team that beat North Penn for the District One title a season is in a similar spot. They lost Mariah Traywick to Shippensburg but return a ton of talent that experienced the best competition the area has to offer.

6. St. Basil Academy Panthers - Basil is very lengthy and really control a game in the post by keeping team's to one shot per possession. Look for them to be in the hunt for a league title and possibly a district title too.

7. Souderton Indians - While girls are going to have to mature quickly, the Indians have some scrappy guards who know how to work their way to the basket between the trees of opponents. Junior Bianca Picard is a possible breakout player of the year.

8. Abington Galloping Ghosts - The losses of Sarah Listenbee and Aiyannah Peal is definitely a blow for the Ghosts, but they return enough scorers to continue to be in the chase for a league title and a spot in the playoffs.

9. Upper Dublin Flying Cardinals - This team could go one way or another in my mind after the controversial dsimisal of their long time coach Vince Catanzaro in the off-season, but if the girls can concentrate on basketball they do have enough talent to contend.

10. Methacton Warriors - Never thought I would see the day Cheltenham girls' basketball is not in my top 10, but with coach Bob Schaefer gone and a ton of seniors graduated they miss the cut. Plus, Methacton came on very strong last season and returns some talented players to the PAC-10.

Other possible title contenders: Cheltenham, Abington Friends, Lansdale Catholic, Perkiomen Valley, Pope John Paul II, Christopher Dock, William Tennent, Jenkintown, Upper Merion, Calvary Baptist
