NFL Power Rankings: First Quarter Grades

1. Green Bay Packers (4-0) (A) - There is no complete team in the NFL right now, but the defending Super Bowl champs are the closest to it. They will give up their share of yards to an offense, but Aaron Rodgers and crew make too many big plays to compete.
2. New England Patriots (3-1) (B+) - Their awful defensive secondary has already led to a division loss, but the Pats and Tom Brady will more than likely outscore the majority of their opponents and ease into the playoffs by year's end.
3. Baltimore Ravens (3-1) (B) - If you can erase that loss to the Titans, which might not look that bad in a few weeks, the Ravens are one of the most balanced teams. They have areas to work on both sides of the ball, but both sides of the ball are also above average.
4. New York Jets (2-2) (B-) - I'm glad they trust Mark Sanchez because I sure don't. And the run game has not been their to support him this year either. Luckily the defense has. 
5. New Orleans Saints (3-1) (B) - They have beaten every team they are suppose to beat and quietly are 3-1. There's more talk about the surprise teams and the Saints just keep winning. They don't have the greatest running game, but Darren Sproles has been a nice add to the offense. 
6. Houston Texans (3-1) (A) - The new Wade Phillips 3-4 defense and been received well by Mario Williams and company. I think over the Steelers is a huge confidence booster. The worries about an injured Andre Johnson do give some concern, however.
7. Detroit Lions (4-0) (A+) - They've won on the road, they come back to win, and they've dominated on both sides of the ball. I can't believe I'm talking about those Detroit Lions. The only reason I don't have them higher is because of their track record.
8. San Diego Chargers (3-1) (B-) Despite the poor play by Phillips Rivers (5 TDs, 6 INTs) the Chargers are 3-1 and have an uncharacteristic fast start. It could be a Super season for the Super Chargers in San Diego.
9. Pittsburgh Steelers (2-2) (D) The offensive line has been atrocious and it has led to a banged up Big Ben and an inconsistent running game. Even with an injury to James Harrison I'm not ready to write off the Steel Curtain.
10. Atlanta Falcons (2-2) (C) The Falcons will have a huge test on Monday Night hosting the Packers, a team that beat them twice a season ago. Loss on the road to the Bears and Bucs, plus a close game against the Seahawks has been wondering how good really is this Falcon team.
11. Buffalo Bills ((3-1) (A) I would have given them the A+ grade if they could have held off the feisty Bengals. Still, along with the Lions they have been the story of the season and they have chance to prove people how legit they in week 5 when they host a desperate Eagles team.
12. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-1) (B-) So the opening week loss to the Lions does not seem so bad anymore. Josh Freeman keeps finding ways to win games and the Bucs once again are right in the middle of the playoff picture.
13. Washington Redskins (3-1) (A) Rex Grossman said they'd win the NFC East and if the season ended today they would. The offensive line has allowed a trio of running backs to have success and the defense is really getting a ton of pressure. I still cannot get over Rex Grossman as legit signal caller though
14. New York Giants (3-1) (B) All people can remember for some reason is the amount of injuries the G-Men have, but no one seems to see they are still tied for the division lead. Maybe it does not matter who is on the field as long as they buy into the scheme.
15. Dallas Cowboys (2-2) (C-) It depends what Tony Romo will show up, but battered man has led him to two solid wins over some tough defense. However the most recent loss to the Lions have many people puzzled.
16. Chicago Bears (2-2) (C) When you're leading reciever, receptions and yards, is your running Matt Forte something is going wrong. The defense has the ability to win them some games and so does Devin Hester, but not enough to compete in the tough NFC North.
17. Philadelphia Eagles (1-3) (F) If there wasn't a final eight minutes or so the Eagles would be 4-0, but teams have made adjustments and just torched the Birds in the fourth quarter. Too many holes on both sides of the ball and the Dream Team is off to a nightmare start.
18. Tennessee Titans (3-1) (A+) No Kenny Britt, a sluggish Chris Johnson and yet the Titans are tied with the Texans for the division lead. Matt Hasslebeck looks years younger in the Music City and they are clicking right now. A win over the Steelers in week 5 will force me to shoot them up these rankings.
19. Oakland Raiders (2-2) (B) If they could play every game on the West Coast or in their Division they'd win the Super Bowl. Unfortunately they have to make a few long flights.
20. San Francisco 49ers (3-1) (A+) Based on the other teams in that division they are a lock for the playoffs, but how far will they go if they only pass the ball 10 times a game to avoid Alex Smith blwoing it. That defense though is something special.
21. Cincinnati Bengals (2-2) (A) We are getting close to the teams that want to "Suck for Luck" and get the first overall pick, but not here. The rookie combo of Andy Dalton and A.J. Green is solid and the defense makes enough plays for them to win 5-to-7 games this season.
22. Arizona Cardinals (1-3) (D) We though Cam Newton was the greatest thing since slice bread because of the Cards. Now, while Cam seems legit, the Cardinal worst secondary in the NFL did have something to do with that in week one.
23. Cleveland Browns (2-2) (D) Another team who can beat any team in the league, but likes to lose at the buzzer and in still unable to reel off any kind of win streak. It all leads to 8-8 being the best case scenario.
24. Carolina Panthers (1-3) (C+) Cam Newtown and Steve Smith may be the only two that keeps this team in games. They paid DeAngelo Williams and they don't even use him and the defense is shadow of its former below average self with Jon Beason on the shelf.
25. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-3) (D) Let's give them some credit for staying competitive despite cutting their starting quarterback days before the season. Blaine Gabbert has made some nice throws, but he needs to make a few more per game if they want to win on a regular basis. 
26. Seattle Seahawks (1-3) D I think they are playing the best they can will the talent the Seattle front office and Pete Carroll has assembled. They need to get into the "Suck for Luck" sweepstakes because Tavaris Jackson is not the answer. 
27. Miami Dolphins (0-4) (C) They aren't going to rolled on by many teams, but they aren't going to win many games either. At least their are teams in the NFL that don't give their fans any hope.
28. Indianapolis Colts (0-4) (F) I'd give them a D grade for the ability to fight hard despite losing Peyton Manning, but they get an F grade because of the drafting and the fact this was a one-man show.
29. Denver Broncos (1-3) (F) I know why Denver wants Tim Tebow to play. They know he's worse than Brady Quinn and Kyle Orton and they really want Andrew Luck.
30. St. Louis Rams (0-4) (F) They were suppose to be the top dogs in the NFC West, but Sam Bradford and the Rams defense has taken a step back. Somebody's a week or two away from losing their job.
31. Kansas City Chiefs (1-3) (D-) I'll give them some credit because they have lost Jamaal Charles, Eric Berry and Tony Moeaki. Still before those injuries I think they were destine for last place. They give up way too many points.
32. Minnesota Vikings (0-4) (F-) How can you have the best running back in the game in Adrian Peterson and a pass rusher like Jared Allen and be the worst team in the league? Oh right, Donavan McNabb. Didn't they see him get benched for Rex Grossman? It's over for Mac5 - Time to see what Christian Ponder has.

GAME OF THE WEEK: Methacton 21, Upper Perk 20 -Every win counts in the PAC-10 this year. The best team can beat the worst on any given night and who's to say which team is the best or worst. The Warrios kept up with the pack with the help of Cooper Given's lengthy frame. Give intercepted a pass to force overtime and in the second extra quarter he blocked the go-ahead extra point. Davonte Fung had the game winning run.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Cheltenham 33, Chichester 13 - Aquil Reed (Cheltenham) - A week after falling to 2-2 against Upper Dublin the Panthers rebounded nicely in a non-league game against Chichester. Aquil Reed was completely invisible against Flying Cardinals and untouchable last Friday. The senior captain running back scurried his way to 273 yards and two touchdowns.

BASKETBALL CAN WAIT
William Tennent 22, Harry S Truman 14 - The Panthers earned the first conference win with a impressive second half. After being held scoreless for the first 24 minutes they made the adjustments and left with a new lease of life. It was Conner Geiger's interception return that sealed the deal.

Pennridge 27, Souderton 7 - All the sudden the defense the Rams though they would have has shown up. Nobody though they could beat down the Indians, but thanks to a stout run defense the Rams are 1-0 in the league and the 0-3 start is a long forgotten.

Wissahickon 28, Norristown 16 - The Trojans have been inconsistent all year and the athleticism of the Eagles' was suppose to be too much. Suppose to be is the emphasized word. Sure Temple recruit Brandon Shipper still scored 124 yards with the Eagles, but Ricky O'Donnell did him a little better with 151 yards and three touchdowns. It look like the Eagles have their own inconsistency problems.

MLB Division Series Breakdown

It's a catchy slogan - Where legends are born. Think about the ground balls through legs, the shots heard around the world, the no-hitter, the Texas Leaguer that beat the New Yorkers.  Maybe Bill Buckner, Robby Thompson, Don Larsen and Luis Gonzalez were above average ball players, but they all are remembered for what they did, or it Buck's case, did not do in the Fall Classic.

So you welcome to my postseason analysis - Where legends are dissected.

Pitching: The advantage goes to Detroit here. Let's start in the back end and work our way up. Jose Valverde is no Mariano Rivera, but his 49-for-49 save situation suggests he pitching like the greatest closer of all-time (who just happens to be Mo). C.C. Sabathia is rare horse that only a few teams are lucky to have in their stall, but MoTown happens to be one of them. Verlander is coming off one of the best seasons for a starting pitcher of all-time, but it's Doug Fister and Max Scherzer that are bit more dangerous than Ivan Nova and Freddy Garica. 

Offense: The middle of the New York order is so locked in that is has to get the nod over Miguel Cabrera and company. It's not the second coming of the Murderer's row, but Granderson, Teixeira, and Cano have been unstoppable. And do you want to be the one that underestimates Derek Jeter or Alex Rodriguez with the title on the tight ropes? I don't think so.

Intangibles: I'd much rather have the Tigers defense with Austin Jackson in center field and and Alex Avila behind the plate. You can run on New York catching and if it were not for Teixeira picking every ball thrown in the dirt we'd be talking about an aging defense and a big liability. Both Joe Girardi and Jim Leyland have their flaws. 

BOTTOM LINE: Yankees in 5 - Go with the home field advantage and experience. Verlander can't pitch every game and I don't trust Fister or Scherzer on the big stage for the first time.

Pitching: It's closer than people think here. The media stares at the Rays young dominant starting staff and neglects to look at an aging and fatigue bullpen. The Rangers C.J. Wilson has been just as good as James Shields this season and both game one starters will receive second place Cy Young votes. All that being said, the Rangers do not have a David Price to pitch a game two or three. Matt Harrison, Derek Holland and company have had good season, but the edge does stand with Tampa.
Offense: It's the Rangers and this is not even close. Sure, BJ Upton and Evan Longoria have been hot lately, but Texas has seven guys who are just as or more capable. Led by Michael Young and Josh Hamilton the Rangers will look to outscore the wildcard squad.
Intangibles: I actually do put a lot of stock in getting hot late. The Rays have to feel invincible after the September they just had (or the September the Red Sox didn't have). Last year's AL Champs aren't sneaking up on any team this year.
BOTTOM LINE: Rays in 4 - I'll take the team on a roll against the team that will sorely misses Cliff Lee.

Pitching: A lot has been made of Ian Kennedy and Daniel Hudson because they have burst on the scene this season, but don't forget about the guys from Milwaukee who have lived on the scene for years now. Yovani Gallardo won 17 games, Zack Greinke went 11-0 at home and Shaun Marcum is a pretty nice three. Whose the game three starter for Arizona? You probably have google that, therefore edge goes to Milwaukee. 

Offense: Diamondbacks' Justin Upton is in the running for MVP, but he'll probably lose out to Ryan Braun or Prince Fielder (Well, probably Matt Kemp, but that does not help my point). So I'll take the best 3-4 punch in baseball over the team that has just come up with clutch hitting from unlikely suspects such as Ryan Roberts and Miguel Montero.

Intangibles: Not sure if I buy winning one for Fielder before he bolts for a megadeal. However, as great of a job Kirk Gibson has done I'm not sure I'm buying the Snakes. 

BOTTOM LINE: Brewers in 3 At first glance I was torn and then I realized the D'Backs have no playoff experience in their organization. Don't worry Zona, you'll be back.

Pitching: They talked before the season about the Phillies having one of the greatest rotations of all-time and they have not disappointed. Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee are both in the Cy Young talk and both are starving for their first World Series title. The Phils do have some questions in the bullpen with young and tired arms (Stutes and Bastardo), but there is not a guy that Tony LaRussa can point to, left or right, and feel totally confident they will be able to get an out.
Offense: The slight edge probably goes to Cardinals. Albert Pujols can win a game by himself and no one knows that better than Brad Lidge. Lance Berkman, Matt Holliday and Allen Craig for that matter have been solid protection. The Phillies actually have not put the postseason lineup on the field that often, but it looks like they'll put Pence in front of Ryan Howard to split the lefties.
Intangibles: While everyone likes the experience of the Phils, the Cards aren't too far behind. And the Cards are hot too, which favors them, but that starting pitcher along with the Philadelphia defense it tough to touch up. Plus, I'd say 102 wins means you were hot all season.
BOTTOM LINE: Phillies in 3 - Kyle Lohse and Edwin Jackson against Halladay and Lee in Philly does not seems like the best idea.

***The pick before the season started was Red Sox over Phillies, but Boston forgot how to get outs in September. Therefore I have to alter the prediction.

GAME OF THE WEEK: Perkiomen Valley 29, Pottstown 21 - The Vikings fell behind early and it look like a Trojan romp on Friday. But something clicked and the second half belonged to the orange and brown. The Vikings used three field goals, a kick return, a rushing score from Steve Giampa and Rasaad Stewart to score 29 unanswered points.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Academy of the New Church 27, Lower Moreland 13  - Travis McCurdy (ANC) - With the Lions making the walk up to ANC's campus it was senior standout McCurdy who got loose for all for the scoring plays. McCurdy opened the scoring with a four yard run, helped his team pull away with an 88 yard kick return and sealed the win with touchdown catches of 34 and 37 yards. McCurdy finished with 124 receiving yards and 39 on the ground.

RUNNING IN THE RAIN: With the fields around Montgomery County taking a beating on Friday night, Mother Nature had a hand in the offensive play calling around the area. The constant rainfall made the ball slick and passing numbers took a hit because of it this week. There were a lot of big rushing numbers for this reason. There were also a lot of big rushing totals because some teams need to work on tackling, but let's blame it on the rain this week.

Pennridge 28, Lansdale Catholic 7 - Poppy Yoder Field was Poppy Yoder Mud-pool on Friday and it did not sophomore Mike Class from picking up 222 yards on the ground in the Rams first win on the year.

Spring-Ford 52, Upper Perk 7 - The Rams have been throwing a lot this season, but with the rain coming down only eight passing calls were dialed up. Also, having a giant lead was a reason for that. The giant lead was thanks to sophomore running back Jarred Jones and his 193 yards and three touchdowns.

Upper Dublin 19, Cheltenham 7 - Andrew Derr took the night off from his aerial attack on the Suburban One League and let a tandem of running backs steal the show. Jino Park and Tybree Stallings each eclispsed the 100-yard mark on the ground.
