Montgomery Media Superlatives
Top Scorer - Jordan Reed (Wissahickon): There is so many many ways Reed can get his points and defenses have had a hard time figuring out how to stop him. He is most dangerous running base line drives and getting to the foul line for easy three-point plays. This Trojan senior has offers to play Division-1 ball.
Best Passer - Wes Brooks (North Penn): Brooks, a senior, has had to handle the scoring this season for the struggling Knights, but in years past when he can just be the point guard he displayed how savvy his vision is.
End-to-End Speed - Montana Mayfield (Abington Friends): Mayfield has scored his points this year, but at the D-1 level in college he is considered a pure point guard that should have a pass first mentality. But what makes schools like Rice and Sienna really bite is his ability to blow by defenders with a quick first step.
Best Defender - Mark Wonderling (Souderton): Every game the Indians assign Wonderling the task of stopping the other team's top scorer. Add skill with giving every ounce of energy in his body, and you have the area's best defender. Wonderling can do everything well, but his defense is great.
Best Three-point shot - Tim Abruzzo (Pennridge): This 1,000 point scorer lived and died with the three-pointer during his first two years with the Rams. While he has added so much more to his game, his quick catch and release from beyond the arc has made him so dangerous.
Best Shot Blocker - Tonah Kpassagnon (Wissahickon): When you are 6-9 you better be able to block shots at the high school level, but there is more to it than that. Kpassagnon understands to wait for it at its peak and his ratio between blocked shots and fouls called while attempting to swat is what makes him so special.
Best Rebounder - Braheime Jackson (Bishop McDevitt): This is the pound-for-pound, or in the case inch-for-inch, one of the top go-getter's. He is not the tallest in the area, but he works hard on the glass and gets a ton of easy put-back points.
Best Inside Game - Zameer McDowell (Spring-Ford): You better have some size when you play the Rams or McDowell will just torch you inside. Phoenixville found out the hard way when the junior dropped 44 points earlier this season. He goes hard to the hoop, but also can finess if need be.
Most Improved - Anthony Durham (Abington): No body really knew what to expect in coach Charles Grasty's second year, but emergence of junior Anthony Durham has made them a top 16 team in District One. Durham is avergaing close to 20 points a game and has give his team a chance to win every night.
Oncoming star - Anthony McKie (Plymouth-Whitemarsh): He still has his off nights, but McKie can score with the best of them. In fact he has dropped 47 points in one game this season. He's probably a point guard at the next level, but as he continues to grow he will help the Colonials return to a state playoff caliber.
Team most likely to win a state playoff game - Wissahickon: Even with a loss to Norristown, the Trojans are still going to win the league I assume and be the highest seed reprsenting Montgomery Media's coverage are in the District One. The Trojans should grab a top 5 seed and revenge its coming one game short of states from a season ago.
Surprise team - Archbishop Wood: When you lose a talent like UMBC's Joe Getz, who did most of the scoring, you just look and go, "it's going to be a rebuilding year at Wood." But with the improvements made by youngster Pat Smith, Tommy Rush, Joe LoStracco and Cody Fitzpatrick the Vikings have one of the best records in the Philadelphia Catholic League.
Team to watch in 2013 - LaSalle: The Explorers have played an extremely difficult schedule this year and while the wins have not always happen, they have been competitive against some of the top competition. The experiences from this season should make the very dangerous next winter.
Most Likely to be a part of NCAA March Madness next year - Marcus Gilbert (Academy New Church): There is no Rakeem Christmas (Syracuse) or Jaylen Bond (Texas) in the area this season, but Gilbert should have a good chance with Farfield to earn a mid-major bid and get the crazy experience of March Madness. The Trojans' Jordan Reed is undecided, but also may go to a D-1 school with a shot at the field of 68.
