Is this the greatest era of Philadelphia Phillies baseball? HS Football Week 5 Predictions

When Roy Halladay threw his 98th pitch and earned his 21st win on the season on Monday the doctor did more than lock up the National League Cy Young Award. One of the newer Phillies helped the 2010 squad earn their fourth consecutive National League East title. It immediately triggers thought of the "D word."

Dynasty cannot be thrown around lightly, but with Charlie Manuel calling shots the Phightins have done nothing but win. Since 2003 they have had 85 wins or more and since 2001 they have had at least 80 wins. The last five years with two world series appearances have been the greatest season in Phillies history in over 25 years.
For those who witnesses Danny Ozark's Phillies in the late 1970's and Dallas Green's champions of the early '80s may have a better comprehension than myself, but over a five year span the greatest Phillies club ever is either 2006-to-now or 1976-to-1980. A second title this season would ultimately lock up the greatest Phillies era of all-time, but as it stand right now it is up for debate.

* reminder 2010 team playoff performance is YTD
The tale of the tape...          1976-1980               2006-2010
Win-loss record (pct.)        467-343 (.577)         454-353 (.560)
First place finishes              (4)'76, '77, '78, '80    (4)'07, '08, '09, '10
Playoff appearances           (4)'76, '77, '78, '80    (4)'07, '08, '09, '10
NL pennants                      1                                *2
WS appearances                1                                *2
WS titles                            1980                          2008
MVPs                                Schmidt                     Rollins, Howard
Cy Youngs                        Carlton (2)                  *none

The bottom line is both eras of Phillies baseball had all the making of all-time great teams from indivudal awards, great managers and heroic climbs to the top. If the Phillies even reach the World Series in 2010 and make it 3-to-1 in appearances it will be tough to argue the better era. If they win a second championship in three years, forget about it. If for some reason the Phillies fall short of the Fall Classic, the debate will have to continue until we see what the Phillies can do in 2011.

Athlete of the Week: Jack Kinniry (Jenkintown) & Pennridge/Souderton football Preview

By Andrew Marcus
Sportswriter for Montgomery Media
amarcus@montgomerynews.com

The Jenkintown football team took a giant leap in the right direction on Friday against Morrisville. A 20-point first qurater propelled the Drakes to a 47-14 win. In C.J. Szydlik's first win as coach of the young Drakes it was senior running back Jack Kinniry that led the charge. Kinniry tallied a interception while playing corner back, but it was his 248 total yards, with 207 of those yards coming on the ground. Kinniry scored one, 44 and 84 yards out. Kinniry has not seen the production he would have so far, but his persistant nature is why he is still the leading rusher for the Drakes as made his big day against the Bulldogs in Morrisville possible.

First look at Pennridge vs Souderton football on Friday 10/1

Souderton (2-2)
L Neshaminy 21-19
W @Perkiomen Valley 39-0
L @Abington 16-15
W Central Bucks West 34-24

Pennridge (3-1)

W Bensalem 34-24
L @Council Rock South 31-0
W @Lansdale Catholic 34-8

The Rams open up the league schedule with one of the more anticipated matchups on the schedule each season against the 2-2 Indians of Souderton. This year the Indians will get to show the Rams their new field for the first time as well as their defense that is putting opposing players on their back at a fast rate.

The Rams have put up some gaudy point totals in their first four games, but some may think they true test was the Golden Hawks week three and that was failed miserably. The strengths of each team will be match up on Friday as the big Red's defensive front takes on the Rams' running game.

Jesse Knepp and Brandon Cope star in a deep backfield with multiple ball carriers, but the Indians do not allow that many big plays on the ground. Knepp and Cope are capable of beating the best defenses so the Indians are not going to be able to fully rely on their run stoppers and will need some solid play from their offense skill positions.

Friday will be the perfect chance for the Rams' Kyle Peters to show what he flashed glimpses of in week one. After throwing for four scores against Haverford the senior signal caller passess have been fewer and further between. Coach Randy Cuthbert needs to trust his quarterback to move the chains and put up some points if they want any shot of beating the Indians on the road.

Even Cuthbert and Indians' coach Ed Gallagher is an exciting match-up, as two of the more respected coaches in the area square off it what always is a one-score nail biters. My early week gut leans me toward Souderton, especially after they handled the previously undefeated Central Bucks West squad pretty handedly.

High School Football Week 4 Predictions

By Andrew Marcus

amarcus@montgomerynews.com

BIG THREE GAMES OF THE WEEK
1. Central Bucks West @ Souderton - The amount of points the Bucks have been able to put up in the first three weeks is remarkable, but a road game against a two-win team in the Indians will be their biggest challenge yet. The Bucks may be averaging 46 points per game, but the Big Red defense is only allowing 13 points per game. I'll take the Bucks is a close game until the end when Rashaad Williams and the Bucks run away with it. Central Bucks West 28, Souderton 14

2. Archbishop Wood @ St. Joe's Prep - Two of the top team in the Philadelphia Catholic League you would think the Prep has the edge in the matchup being the home team and the bigger school. Not so fast, as the Vikings are no ordinary Class AAA school and they have enough talent on the road, with former Hawk Desmon Peoples and company to walk away with a win. It will not be easy, but it is feasible. Archbishop Wood 21, St. Joe's Prep 14

3. Abington @ Neshaminy - Abington is always a strong team in District One and beating Neshaminy on the road would be a resume builder like no other. It will be a tough task for Julien Ireland and the rest of the Galloping Ghosts, but coach Tim Sorber will have his team ready to play against the Redskins. I'll pick Neshaminy to win, but it will be closer than some think. Neshaminy 16, Abington 13

Athlete of the Week: Dom DeFazio (Hatboro-Horsham)

By Andrew Marcus
Sportswriter for Montgomery Media
amarcus@montgomerynews.com

The offensive line sometimes is more recognizable than a fullback. Everyone tries to make sure to not leave the big bodies up front nameless, but what they can forget about is the fullback who is doing the same amount of blocking.

Hatboro-Horsham's fullback Dom DeFazio did his fair share of blocking for his tailback Lee Riches on Monday against Council Rock North, but he also drifted into spotlight with his performance when his number was called. While Riches ran for 115 yards, DeFazio churned up 208 yards in the Hatters' 27-21 win.

READ ABOUT THE HATBORO-HORSHAM THRILLER AGAINST C.R. NORTH HERE!

The score could have read Indians 21, DeFazio 27 as he accounted for all four touchdowns. He scored from 21, 11, 40 and four yards out with the four yarder coming in the second over time. What is even more remarkable than the statistics is the fact it was his first action of the seaon. DeFazio sustained a concussion on day two of preseason workouts and has been absent from the Hatters' huddle. His performance verfies he is ready to go.

Tandem Running Backs in HS Football

After three weeks of smash mouth football and seeing a handful of teams, one aspect seems to be a key ingredient. Much like the National Football League, high school football has moved to a two-running back attack.

In order to win on Friday night, or this week for most Thursday (for Council Rock South and Hatboro-Horsham on Monday) the forumula is to have two guys that can carry the football. Usually with one back that can get out to the corner and another that can pick up a handful with his helmet leading up the middle.

In Pennridge's first two wins of the year Jesse Knepp and Brandon Cope has complemented each other well. When they fell to the Golden Hawks on Monday it was Mark Dimirgian and Brian Donnelly causing choas. Upper Moreland ran all over Furness with Greg Adamson and Jordan Spector and Hatbro-Horsham used DeFazio and Riches to pull off the win over the Indians.

It may not be a necessity for teams with a experienced quarterback, but it sure does help. To be able to switch personal in the backfield and still have success to point where two guys are picking up over 100 yards on the ground does a lot for keeping opposing defenses off balance. Fullbacks, being bigger and stronger, are getting more touches these days as smaller defense struggle to stop players that could also line up as lineman or defensive tackles.

Closer look at MLB Playoffs and Week 3 HS Football Predictions

Watching your home team all year long can sometimes fog you perception on the club. If you were to watch the Philadelphia Phillies over 100 times in the 162 game season you might be over-concerned by the problems they have dealt with all year. And maybe you only were able to watch 10 of the New York Yankees' games and they look pretty solid all around. Well here's a new flash before you hit the alert button in your favorite team's World Series aspirations -  every team in the major league is flawed.

There about eight teams in the majors that have a legit shot at the title in my mind and 10 teams that are still in the hunt. Who ever gets hot at the right time will win it all in 2010. Let's take a closer look at the 12 contending teams' strength, weakness, and x-factors.

NL EAST
Philadelphia Phillies: STRENGTH - The starting rotation for the 2008 champs has been lights out all year. On any other team Cole Hamels and Roy Oswalt are aces, but in Philadelphia behind Roy Halladay they are considered the two and three. That trio will be deadly come the post season.
WEAKNESS - It was only three years ago that the Phils' shortstop Jimmy Rollins was winning the National League MVP award, but now he is hurt and unreliable when he is in the lineup. When J-Roll is running on all cylinders the Phillies offense rolls, but Rollins has never clicked in 2010 and signs of the end of a great career are near. Shane Victorino has been serviceable in the lead-off spot, but the Phils are going to need to put out one lineup in the playoffs and stick to it. Rollins need to be getting on base to maximize the Phils' offensive potential.
PHI SS Jimmy Rollins
X-FACTOR - The Phillies have received the full spectra of Brad Lidge this year. They have seen stellar Lidge, hurt Lidge, and awful Lidge. Currently Lidge is making his way back from the injury bug and pitching well. If the Phillies can get Lidge to be lights out for the post season you mine as well call it good night for the National League and the Phils are my favorite to represent the N.L. for the third consecutive year.

Atlanta Braves: STRENGTH -  The bullpen led by closer Billy Wagner has been so strong all year they have contributed to a lot of the Bravos success. They have been able to shorten games and limit innings by their young starters Tommy Hanson and Jair Jurrjens, as well as hold teams at zero and allow the offense to comeback. Jonny Venters should get some consideration for rookie of the year as a setup man and Peter Moylan, Takashi Saito, and Eric O'Flaherty have been strong in innings six through eight.
WEAKNESS - The Braves offense has been inconsistent all year long and with Chipper Jones out for the year they are missing that true three-hole hitter that can be counted on for big RBIs in the post season. Martin Prado and Jason Heyward have been that guy at times, but they are better used in other spots of the order.
X-FACTOR - If Derrek Lee or anyone can emerge as the big bat the Braves, they will be a tough out in a five or seven game series. Troy Glaus and Brian McCann are other guys that have the potential to become the feared fall classic hitter.

NL CENTRAL
Cincinnati Reds: STRENGTH - The Reds offense can rake and Joey Votto is the lumbering lunatic in the middle of it. A sweet lefty stroke and possible MVP of the 2010 season, the Reds can attack for runs in a hurry. Brandon Phillips, Jay Bruce, Scott Rolen and company all contribute to the new red machine and in their home ball park opponent's must try to match them homer-for-homer if they want to leave Ohio with a win.
CIN 1B Joey Votto

WEAKNESS - At one time the bullpen was one of the Reds strengths, but the long season has taken a toll on its veteran arms. Arthur Rhodes and closer Francisco Cordero started the season lights out, but lately have been rather mortal. Lefty phenom Aroldis Chapman adds a unknown nastiness to the pen, but he can be more wild than effective sometimes.
X-FACTOR - I could not even tell you how Dusty Baker would set up his rotation. The starters have been a mixed bag all year, but serviceable. Johnny Cueto and Bronson Arroyo are probably the lone locks for the rotation with Homer Bailey, Travis Wood, Aaron Harang, Edinson Volquez and Mike Leake fighting it out for the other two spots.

St. Louis Cardinals: STRENGTH - The starting rotation. WEAKNESS - The offense minus Albert Pujols. X-FACTOR - The offense minus Albert Pujols (Colby Rasmus, John Jay, Yadier Molina)

NL WEST
San Diego Padres: STRENGTH -The entire pitching staff has been the best in baseball for the majority of the year. Using cavernous Petco Park to their advantage, the Padres have received quality starts from their starters and untouchable innings from Luke Gregerson, Mike Adams, and closer Heath Bell.
WEAKNESS - If it was not for Adrian Gonzalez I'm not sure the Padres would have scored 100 runs as a team this season. They have no true lead off man, no run producers to protect Gonzalez and no offense that looks like it would owned by a division leader.
X-FACTOR - If the Padres want any chance to make the World Series they are going to have to show they leave sunny So-Cal and win on the road in small stadiums such as Great American Ball Park (CIN) and Citizens Bank Park (PHI).

San Francisco Giants: STRENGTH - starting rotation. WEAKNESS - offense. X-FACTOR - the bullpen bridge from the starters to closer Brian Wilson.

Colorado Rockies: STRENGTH - offense. WEAKNESS -  starting rotation consistency.X-FACTOR - closer Huston Street.

NYY SS Derek Jeter
AL EAST
New York Yankees: STRENGTH - It quite possibly is the most feared lineup in baseball. Just when you think you got Derek Jeter out to lead off the inning, here comes Mark Teixeira, Alex Rodriguez, and this year's MVP candidate Robinson Cano. The Yanks can out slug anyone and with Mariano Rivera in the back-end, games can be over in a hurry.
WEAKNESS - Behind another year of C.C. Sabathia brilliance has been a pile of patheticness. A.J. Burnett and Javier Vazquez have been no where near as good as advertised, Andy Pettitte has missed most of the season, Phil Hughes has hit a wall since his all-star first half, and the fill-in are not worthy of getting their mentioned.
X-FACTOR - The fact they have been there and done that 27 times plays a big part in my prediction for them to represent the American League in the World Series. While the Rangers, Rays, and Twins have all had great seasons, the Yanks experience gives them the slight edge to return to the Fall Classic.

Tampa Bay Rays: STRENGTH - It's young, but it's filthy. The Rays starting rotation has all the makings of sweeping by even the toughest offenses in the post season. David Price, Matt Garza, James Shields have all experienced a World Series baseball in 2008 and they have a chance to better in 2010.
WEAKNESS - The Rays are full of young and talented athletes, but they are not the brightest baseball players. Manager Joe Maddon covers up for the stupidity of players like B.J. Upton and Carl Crawford as much as he can, but they are more reactionary players, rather than instincts.
X-FACTOR - In the 2008 the Rays had Price pitching in big spots late in games and they may have the same shut down youngster them in 2010, whether it be Wade Davis or Jeremy Hellickson. They may project as starters, but they could be unhittable for one inning in the playoffs.

AL CENTRAL
Minnesota Twins: STRENGTH - Ron Gardenhire sometimes gets lost in the Twin Cities, but he is the best manager no one talks about. He does not have the sexiest starters, lineup or bullpen, but he finds the right formula to get the job done on a daily basis.
WEAKNESS - The Twins really struggle away from Target Field and traveling to New York, Tampa, or Texas will really tough. If they want to go anywhere this year they need to lock up home field advanatge through the playoffs.
X-FACTOR - A concussion over a month ago has sideline former MVP first basemen Justin Morneau, yet the Twinkees have still be able to run away from the White Sox. If Morneau can contribute at all in the playoffs it will be a big bonus.
MIN C Joe Mauer

Chicago White Sox: STRENGTH - Veteran leaders in Paul Konerko, Omar Vizquel, Mark Buehrle, and A.J. Piersynzski. WEAKNESS - closer woes. X-FACTOR - Edwin Jackson.

AL WEST
Texas Rangers: STRENGTH - The Yankees may get my nod for the best offense, but the club down south is a very close second. The Rangers can mash from one-through-nine and anyone can take a quick inning into a marathon.
WEAKNESS - Cliff Lee has ace abilities, but he too has been flawed since arriving in Arlington. The other four starters have just the same amount of stardom, but they all flirt with four or five run outing monthly. That kind of unknown quantity from your starters will kill you in the post season.
X-FACTOR - If Josh Hamilton is in the lineup and fully healthy the Rangers offense is frightening. The probable A.L. MVP cannot stay on the field and may be the thorn in the side that knock the Rangers out of contention before they can blink.
Abington will play host to Souderton on Thursday

Athlete of the Week: Jesse Knepp (Pennridge)

By Andrew Marcus

Think about everything that has stood in the way of Pennridge running back Jesse Knepp since first suiting up for the Rams as a sophomore. Then realize he going to finish his high school career with nearly 4,000 rushing yards despite all the obstacles.
Pennridge RB/DB Jesse Knepp
His first two year in coach Randy Cuthbert's offense he has shared the rock with multiple players, usually three players averaging around 10 carries a game, but Knepp has done the most with his opportunities.
The two-way player has battled nagging injuries in the last two seasons and has missed some games, but when he is on the field you know he is going to do something special.
Maybe the injuries correlate with his running style, but it's what makes the 5-foot-9, 175 pounder such and impact for the Rams. When it looks like Knepp is about to be stopped for five yards, he lowers his shoulder, falls forward, and grab an extra foot. He is not afraid to take a big hit and he is always good for giving out a few ear-ringer blows of his own.
Knepp can taste the end zone as soon as he secures the ball between the 2-and-the-0 on the front of his jersey. He's not afraid to plow through the tackles or use his third gear to get outside.
Last Friday against Bensalem was just another typical day at Poppy Yoder Field for Knepp, but anyone else, highlights one-through-nine on their reel of film. Knepp picked up 230 yards on 25 carries. He scored three times from five, 35, and seven yards out in a 34-24 win. He was an easy pick for athlete of the week.

Week 2 HS Football Predictions and Coach of the Week: Nikki Thren

Coach of the Week: Nikki Thren (Pennridge Fied Hockey)

There is no such thing a seniority when it comes to winning field hockey games. First year coach Nikki Thren has come into Pennridge without any preconceived notions about her players and the equal opportunity has help the Rams start off the season with a bang. Class ranks and previous accomplishments have been disregarded and the former All-American at Ursinus is putting her best lineup on the field based on what she has seen since taking over this summer.

Pennridge's Sarah Yerk (JR)
In their 11-0 win over Upper Moreland last Tuesday the Rams recieved support from all different angles. The seniors rallied the troops and juniors who played on jayvee during the Rams' 1-17 season from a year ago played the majority of the minutes. Even a few freshman found the transition to the varsity ranks rather either.
Freshamn Addy Marshall and Haley Taylor combined for six of the 11 goals. Junior Kelly Herd, whose varisty minutes were few and far between a season ago, contributed with two goals and four assists.
Merely two years removed from college field hockey herself, Thren's fresh point of view has given the Rams a hole new outlook on the season as they prepare for the tougher assignments in league play.

Pennridge's Jenna Anderson (SR)
Thren has immediately gained the respect of her team and the wins just back up she knows a thing or two about field hockey. Next up on the schedule for Thren's Rams is Norristown before they open up the league schedue against Central Bucks South and North Penn

Each year in the National Football League players emerge, veteran superstars fade and injuries occur. It all helps shapes the standings. It is the reason half of the playoff teams from the previous year miss out the next season. Peyton Manning is the constant that keeps the Indianapolis Colts favorites to win the AFC South, but each division has variables that shape the Super Bowl winning season.
The Saints knew Drew Brees was going to lead a super size offense, barring an injury, but safety Darren Sharper was the game changer by turning New Orleans' defense into a turnover machine.

Without any further adieu, here are my 2010 NFL Predictions with and the Game-changer in each Division.

NFC EAST
1. Dallas Cowboys *
2. New York Giants
3. Philadelphia Eagles
4. Washington Redskins
GAME-CHANGER: Antrel Rolle (NYG) - The defensive back comes to the G-Men way of the Arizona Cardinals with the job description of shutting down some big time deep threats in the division. Miles Austin (DAL), Desean Jackson (PHI) and Santana Moss will help their teams put up points and if the Giants want to compete for a playoff spot they will need Rolle to help the secondary improve from a year ago.
NYG Antrel Rolle

NFC WEST
1 San Francisco 49ers *
2. Arizona Cardinals
3.  Seattle Seahawks
4. St. Louis Rams
GAME-CHANGER:  Derek Anderson (ARI) -  With Matt Leinart (HOU) no longer in the picture Arizona's head coach Ken Whisenhunt has put his confidence in the former Brown pro-bowler. If Anderson can connect with Larry Fitzgerald and Steve Breaston more times than his opponent's corner backs, the Cardinals may be able to retain the top spot in the West.

ARI Derek Anderson

NFC NORTH
1. Green Bay Packers *
2. Minnesota Vikings*
3. Detroit Lions
4. Chicago Bears
GAME-CHANGER: Ndamukong Sugh (DET) - The second overall pick in last April's Draft has a chance to give the Lions some kind of resemblance of a run defense. If they can induce more punts and less scores the Lions could have a whole new look. It will be tough to overtake the Packers and Vikings for the division, but they could be fighting for a wild-card spot late into the season.
DET Ndamukong Suh

NFC SOUTH
1. New Orleans Saints *
2. Atlanta Falcons *
3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
4. Carolina Panthers
GAME-CHANGER: Michael Turner (ATL) - When Turner is on the field eating clock and picking up over four yards per rush the Falcons have a much more calmer quarterback under center. Matt Ryan needs his punisher in the back field to illeviate some pressure from his shoulders. If Matty Ice and the DirtyBirds want to return to their playoff form from 2008 when Turner was unstoppable and Ryan looked like a future hall-of-famer as a rookie, the run game needs to be the key cog.
ATL Michael Turner

AFC EAST.
1. New England Patriots *
2. Miami Dolphins *
3. New York Jets
4. Buffalo Bills
GAME-CHANGER: Jerod Mayo (NE) - There is no question in my mind Tom Brady, Randy Moss and Wes Welker will be able to lead the Pats' offense to a top five unit in the league. Contract situations and past injuries do not scare, but their defense does. The Patriots defense looks very suspect and they will need Jerod Mayo to take the next step and become one of the best in the game if they want to win one more for Tom and hold of the Jets and Phins.
NE Jerod Mayo

AFC WEST
1. San Diego Chargers *
2. Oakland Raiders
3. Denver Broncos
4. Kansas City Chiefs
GAME-CHANGER: Darren McFaddden (OAK) - Felix Jones (DAL) has been the better Arkansas Razorback to this point in the former tandem's NFL careers, but with Michael Bush already hurt to start the season, the Raiders need to count on McFadden more than ever. The defense has always been respectable and Jason Campbell is big step up from JaMarcus Rusell, but a run game needs to be establish to contend.
OAK Darren McFadden

AFC NORTH
1. Baltimore Ravens *
2. Cincinnati Bengals
3. Pittsburgh Steelers
4. Cleveland Browns
GAME-CHANGER: Anquan Boldin (BAL) - A team known for its defense and run game for the past decade has a chance to have a whole-new philosophy in 2010. Delaware's Joe Flacco has the arm to stretch the field and now he has the receivers in Boldin, TJ Houshmandzedah, and Derrick Mason to let it fly.
BAL Anquan Boldin

AFC SOUTH
1. Indianapolis Colts*
2. Houston Texans *
3. Tennessee Titans
4. Jacksonville Jaguars
GAME-CHANGER: Amobi Okoye (HOU) - After using their first and second round picks on defensive players for a few years in a row the unit now has a chance to be its strength. Mario Williams is the freak coming off the end making plays in the backfield, Demeco Ryan is one of the best linebackers in the game never mentioned, and Amobi Okoye has a chance to stuff runners like Chris Johnson (TEN), Joe Addai (IND), and Maurice Jones-Drew (JAX). Okoye was drafted in the first round at 19 years old and now a veteran in the NFL before he can get into a bar, the Houston front seven has a chance to be great.
