PROJECTED ROTATION

PROJECTED BULLPEN
Closer: Zach Britton
Set-up: Darren O'Day

Top Prospect: Dylan Bundy (P)

BREAKOUT - While you can wonder how a team trying to get over the ALCS hurdle can just let offensive threats like Nick Markakis and Nelson Cruz walk it is because their faith in a better year from Chris Davis, Matt Wieters, JJ Hardy, and especially Manny Machado. I healthy season from the future could make Machado the current hot commodity right now. Once in talks with Bryce Harper and Mike Trout for the face of baseball, Machado has every chance to put together a all-star, if not MVP type season this year.

SPRING STORYLINES - After falling one series shy of the Fall Classic fans want to see their team add in the offseason, but the O's have stayed the same, if something, they subtracted. The same old stroy about the starting staff, and do they have enough to contend with Chris Tillman as the ace, when he is really a two or a three remains. But the real question is who will be scoring runs besides Adam Jones for this current perennial contender.

LAST YEAR'S RECORD: 96-66 (1st in AL East)

PROJECTED 2013 FINISH: 91-71 (1st in AL East)

PROJECTED BULLPEN

Top Prospect: Stephen Piscotty (OF)

BREAKOUT - It is almost insane to think the Cardinals will not be in the division hunt because they are every season. It is also smart to think a pitcher will find a way to have success in Saint Lou. Look for Marco Gonzales to get a crack at the rotation and relish the role of fifth start. Like Joe Kelly, Jaimie Garcia and all starters before him, he should put up solid numbers for manager Mike Matheny.

SPRING STORYLINES - Health is the biggest issue here. Adam Wainwright put a scare into the Cardinals, but looks ready for Opening Day. He will be monitored closely all season. But also Wacha, Garcia, Rosenthal, Holliday, and the list goes on for Cardinals trying to stay on the field. If they are on the field, the Cardinals have a chance to be the best team in baseball.

Top Prospect: DJ Peterson (3B)

BREAKOUT - I try not to look at Spring Training stats too much, but when a player has the minor league pedigree and some success at the big league level it is hard not to overlook the dominance for Taijuan Walker. In 18 innings he has fanned 19 batters and not allowed a run. I'll bank on a breakout here for the former top prospect.

SPRING STORYLINES - While it's actually the stadium the frustrates me and I cannot look at the offense and think Nelson Cruz can do what he did in Baltimore or any Mariner can produce like they would outside of Safeco. However the pitching staff has a chance to be dangerous and the Mariners should be able to squeak in enough runs to support a playoff team.

Henderson Alvarez

Jose Fernandez (out until June)

PROJECTED BULLPEN
Closer: Steve Cishek
Set-up Man: Aaron Crow

Top Prospect: Tyler Nolek (P)

BREAKOUT - While Steve Cishek had his ups and downs during his team as a Marlins closer, pitching for a contender will show the Fish what they have in the back-end of their bullpen. I don't Cishek will be lights out, but he will not lose his job and flirt with 40 saves in South Beach.

SPRING STORYLINES - The Marlins made some nice tweaks to the team this off season and it might just come down to chemistry for personalities like Dee Gordon, Mat Latos, and Mike Morse. If they can keep it together until July when Jose Fernandez returns, the Marlins might even challenge for a National League East crown. The Marlins seem to win it all every six -to - 12 years or so.

PROJECTED ROTATION

Charlie Morton

PROJECTED BULLPEN

Top Prospect: Tyler Glasnow (P)

BREAKOUT - The Pirates are expected to be in the playoff hunt after back-to-back successful seasons. In order the club to take another step players around former MVP and last year's batting champ Josh Harrison will need to step up. I look for Gerrit Cole to take another step forward. He has a chance to be one of the best pitchers in the National League, and even challenge Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw for the Cy Young Award.

SPRING STORYLINES - In Bradenton this Spring people are looking closely into the hearts of the Bucs. Its too early to tell if the Pirates are just a good team, or if they have what it take to bring a title to the Steel City. McCutchen needs help in the order, in order to get that done.

PROJECTED ROTATION

Anibal Sanchez

PROJECTED BULLPEN
Closer: Joe Nathan
Set-up Man: Joakim Soria

Top Prospect: Steven Moya (OF)

BREAKOUT - The majority of this team is past the point of a breakout campgain. They have been one of the best teams in the American League for a better part of the decade. Not sure how much shortstop Jose Igleasias will actually hit, but he will definitely stay in the lineup for his defense. After missing all of last year, look for this former Boston farm hand to be in the gold glove conversation and sure up the Tigers defense.

SPRING STORYLINES - We talk about it every spring and once again the back of the Tigers bullpen is the question mark. They thought it was sured up with the acquisition of Joe Nathan, but it looks like he only has so many bullets left. The division is getting harder and the stars like Justin Verlander and Miguel Cabrera are getting older. They better find a way to win and fast, or it will be time to rebuild before they get their championship.

PROJECTED ROTATION
James Shields
Andrew Cashner

Brandon Morrow

PROJECTED BULLPEN
Closer: Joaquin Benoit
Set-up: Kevin Quackenbush

Top Prospect: Austin Hedges (C)

BREAKOUT - Now that the lineup is stocked full of potential pop, the once three-hole hitter Jedd Gyorko slips down to sixth or seventh and should see some fastballs to hit. With newcomers like Wil Myers, Matt Kemp, and Justin Upton getting on base look for the power-hitting second basemen to flirt with 100 RBIs in his second full season.

SPRING STORYLINES - What a job new general manager AJ Preller has done. He had the vision and stones the prior men in business did not have. He found a way to go from the worst hitting team in baseball to, well at least on paper, should not be the worst team on paper. We shall see how Kemp, Upton, and Myers respond to the friendly confines of Petco, but it cannot be much worse than 2014's offense.

PROJECTED ROTATION
Corey Kluber
Carlos Carrasco
Trevor Bauer
Zach McAllister
TJ House

PROJECTED BULLPEN
Co-Closer: Cody Allen
Set-up Man: Bryan Shaw

Top Prospect: Francisco Lindor (SS)

BREAKOUT - Carlos Carrasco is one of those former top prospects, lost in the shuffle of todays here and now. There are always the "next big things" coming and going and injuries have this guy flying under the radar entering the season. Carrasco had a 2.55 ERA last year and 1.72 ERA after the all-star break. He and Corey Kluber, the reigning Cy Young award winner could become a deadly one-two punch.

SPRING STORYLINES - Just because 85 wins was not enough to make the playoffs in back-to-back years, the Tribe's season success sort of get buried. But they have been a strong team since Terry Francona has taken over and now they need to prove they have staying power and can take the next step. Stars like Jason Kipnis and Carlos Santana need to take the next step and Michael Brantley needs to have similar season to his 2014, near MVP year.

Matt Harvey
Bartolo Colon
Jacob DeGrom
Jon Niese
Dillon Gee

PROJECTED BULLPEN
Closer: Jenrry Mejia
Set-up: Jeurys Familia

Top Prospect: Noah Syndergaard (P)

BREAKOUT - There are easy breakout choices when you look at a talented starting pitching staff. Harvey alreay had his campaign, as did DeGrom, and with Zack Wheeler hurt, let's look at bullpen instead of reaching for Noah Syndergaard. Mets closer Jenrry Mejia has a chance to solidfy himself in the ninth inning. In save situations last year he had a 1.50 ERA and allowed five earned runs in 30 innings. Mejia has a chance to flirt with 40 plus saves this season.

SPRING STORYLINES - It is a sexy pick this season to see the Mets flirt with the playoffs. The loss of Wheeler to Tommy John stings, but not many teams have the depth the Mets do on the mound. Dillon Gee and Rafael Montero will fill in just fine. The real question comes in the lineup. Can run producers like David Wright, Curtis Granderson, and Michael Cuddyer still drive in the runs needed to support their staff.

PROJECTED BULLPEN

BREAKOUT - The announcement has been made and Mookie Betts will play center field every day in Boston, beating of the six other viable starters in the outfield. The athletic 22 year-old has a chance to flirt with 100 runs right away if he can stay atop of the potent lineup the Red Sox have created.

SPRING STORYLINES - It will be interesting to see how the new faces fit in for the Red Sox. Pablo Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez have a chance to take the Red Sox from last to first place if they stay healthy and field their positions. Someone if a starting rotation of number three starters will have to step up and be team ace. Or they will need to make a big move at the deadline.

Top Prospect: Kyle Crick (P)

BREAKOUT - With the Kung Fu Panda (Pablo Sandoval) in Boston and Hunter Pence injured to start the year someone must step up to avoid a slow start. To get the best Buster Posey possible he needs some protection in the order. The best chance to take the next step in their career has to be Brandon Belt. He may never hit 25 homers playing by the Bay, but a .300 average and 100RBIs is realistic for the first basemen,

SPRING STORYLINES - The fans in San Francisco thankfully know all about the World Series hangover. They have been unable to repeat prior's year success. They average 90 wins in the even years with thee titles to show for it and 81 wins in the year after parading down San Fran. Can they snap the trend and make the playoffs in back-to-back years for the first time since 2002-2003.

BREAKOUT - Pineda was pretty stellar in 76 innings last season. After missing three seasons with injuries, now 26 years old, the 6-7 hurler has every chance to put a full season together, make an all-star game, and be the top pitcher on a talented starting staff.

SPRING STORYLINES - The bullpen is lights out, but they do not have any defined roles yet. What inning Andrew Miller and Dellin Betances pitch in may be the least of their worries, but they still have to figure that out. What they need to figure out is how much they can get in offensive players like Carlos Beltran, Alex Rodriguez, and Mark Teixeira on the back end of their careers.

BREAKOUT - There is a good chance one of the Blue Jay's young arms prove to be bonafide major leaguers this season. Aaron Sanchez is a 22 year-old right hander can reach the upper 90s, but needs to limit the walks. Daniel Norris however has better command of all his pitches and could stand out in his age 21 season.

SPRING STORYLINES - The free additions were suppose to put the Blue Jays over the top, but we have heard that pitch for before. Jose Reyes and Mark Buerhle did not push them past the other teams in the East. It will be interesting to see if a Russell Martin and Josh Donaldson can.

While Kris Bryant may win Rookie of the Year, Rizzo could be an all-star selection, Javier Baez, Jorge Soler, and Addison Russell still have holes in their game to fill.

SPRING STORYLINES - The signing of Jon Lester was a statement. The Cubs believe they are ready to contend and contend this season. They play in a challenging division, but if the pitching staff keeps it together, they should be able to make noise postseason noise.

BREAKOUT - While I think many things in Oakland are flawed like the stadium, the philosphies, and the recent motion picture, one thing Billy Beane knows how to do is get the most out of underrated players. It may not result in championships, but it should result in string seasons from new Athletics. If Brett Lawrie can stay healthy I fully expect him to produce near the level of the recently departed Josh Donaldson. Maybe not MVP type numbers, but all-star level is not out of the question.

SPRING STORYLINES - Just when a core group of going were getting to the playoffs every season, in comes Beane and his big, brainy ideas. We shall see if Lawrie, Ike Davis, and Billy Butler can all take the next step in their careers.

BREAKOUT - I am buying Michael Fiers incredible stretch run to 2014. In the second half he struck out 71 in 64 innings with a 2.09 ERA. I think Fiers should be a serviceable part to the rotation with a strong chance to be the ace by the end of the year.

SPRING STORYLINES - While Jonathan Lucroy had a MVP-type year last season, they need the real former MVP Ryan Braun to return to his old form if they are going to contend. As always, all eyes are the right fielder. If the offense can return to an elite form behind Carlos Gomez, Braun, Lucroy, and Aramis Ramirez in his final season, the Brewers could find a way to make the postseason after last year's forgettable second half.

BREAKOUT - They were my sexy World Series pick two years in a row and they have let me down. They have let their rotation crumble and their offense get old. If anyone is going to spark Cincy it is going to be one of the young arms. I still think Tony Cingrani has a big future, though it might not be this year. Robert Stephenson is on the way, but how about Mike Leake. Leake came straight from Arizona State to the pros and still has chance to put an all-star first half together.

SPRING STORYLINES - If anyone can take the Reds from a 70-win club to a playoff contender it's the MVP Joey Votto in the middle of the order. Votto needs to start swinging a little more and drive in a few more runs and take a few less walks. Same could be said for Jay Bruce. Not the walking thing, more contact in general. Bruce and Votto will decide the Reds fate this year and for the foreseeable future.

BREAKOUT - I may be the last sitting in the Eric Hosmer bandwagon, but I am not ready to get out just yet. Entering his age 25 season the first basemen can still reach the potential every one saw for him in the minors and his rookie year. Hosmer has a great chance to put it all together this year and if the Royals can contend like last season, be in the running for the MVP.

SPRING STORYLINES - The Royals had too much fun reaching the Fall Classic last year do not want to wait another 30 years to see it again. But the  question remains can they repeat the magic? With a target on their back? With no true ace like James Shields? No clubhouse vet like Billy Butler? A lot has changed in KC? The bullpen is the same though. And it is deadly.

Justin in now in San Diego, BJ is now Melvin, and the GM is John Hart who came in and blew the whole thing up. Shelby Miller maybe did not need a change of scenery that bad, but instead of pitching for a contender, coming to Atlanta may relax him and do wonders for his mental state. Albeit for a losing team.

SPRING STORYLINES - Who is going to stay healthy long enough to pitch? Every time someone takes the mound they have to hold their breath. It all started last spring with Kris Medlen (now in Kansas City) and Brandon Beachy (now a Dodgers), who just needed his second Tommy John. Now Mike Minor is hurt  and the hits just keep on coming.

Tons of people love Steve Sousza, and he may, but I am a Nick Franklin. He was unwanted in Seattle, but this kid can play the middle infield and swing it a little bit. He has every chance to be as good as Asdrubal Cabrera during his Cleveland years, his current double-play partner.

SPRING STORYLINES - There is no Andrew Friedman this season up in the Owner's Box to rebuild this group of underage, underpaid, future phenoms. Evan Longoria may need to man up and carry this group, at least until Alex Cobb, Matt Moore, and Jake McGee get healthy and fill out the pitching staff. BREAKOUT - There are players on this team that could bounce back, but not necessarily breakout. Prince Fielder, Shin-Soo Choo, and Yovani Gallardo all need to find their 2013 form if Rangers want to contend this season, especially with Yu Darvish out for the year. Maybe Ryan Rua can get an early call from Triple-A and give some much needed energy to a bland outfielder trio.

SPRING STORYLINES - It is hard to tell how much of last year's disaster was about injuries and how much was about a bad major league roster. Now that ace Yu Darvish needs Tommy John surgery before the season starts, the Rangers already start to load up the DL list. Changes need to be made in Arlington or the Ball Park with be empty and Price Fielder's contract will be one of the biggest mistakes of all-time.

LAST YEAR'S RECORD: 67-95 (5th in AL West)

PROJECTED 2013 FINISH: 73-89 (4th in AL West)

PROJECTED LINEUP

RF Charlie Blackmon
LF Carlos Gonzalez
SS Troy Tulowitzki
1B Justin Morneau
3B Nolan Arenado
C Wilin Rosario
2B DJ LeMahieu

PROJECTED ROTATION
Kyle Kendrick

PROJECTED BULLPEN
Closer: LaTroy Hawkins
Set-up: Rex Brothers

Top Prospect: Jon Gray (LHP)

BREAKOUT - He already has a gold glove, but now Nolan Arenado has chance to become the top third basemen in the National League. He is only 23 years-old and a broken finger and pneumonia will not stop him from being one of many threats in a dangerous lineup.

SPRING STORYLINES - The Rockies rotation won't make anyone shake in their cleats up in the batter's box, but they should be able to score some runs. And they should be able to score some runs at home. But everyone will keep a third eye on Troy Tulowitzki and fourth eye on Carlos Gonzalez. Those two are the key for the Rockies. The more they stay on the field the better chance Colorado has to win ballgames.

LAST YEAR'S RECORD: 66-96 (4th in NL West)

PROJECTED 2013 FINISH: 76-86 (5th in NL West)

PROJECTED ROTATION
Josh Collmenter

Allen Webster

PROJECTED BULLPEN
Closer: Addison Reed
Set-up: Brad Ziegler

Top Prospect: Archie Bradley (SP)

BREAKOUT - In a down year for the D'Backs, you have to look for any signs of life. The signing of Yasmany Tomas has some risk to, but his raw power should at least lead to a few highlight worthy home runs. Tomas should flirt with Rookie of the Year accolades if his glove keeps him on the field.

SPRING STORYLINES - It's clear the snakes have some serious star potenital in Paul Goldschimdt. He could be winning MVPs on winning teams, but does not look to be the case in the desert. They may be pulling at short straws, but the snakes will keep an eye on a young pitching staff. Guys like Archie Bradlye and the former Red Sox farmhands Rubby de la Rosa and Allen Webster will be the difference makers this season.

LAST YEAR'S RECORD: 64-98 (5th in NL West)

PROJECTED 2013 FINISH: 69-93 (5th in NL West)

PROJECTED ROTATION

PROJECTED BULLPEN
Closer: Chad Qualls
Set-up: Luke Gregerson

Top Prospect: Carlos Correa (SS)

BREAKOUT - The future of the Astros is still in the minors, but one of the core players will be George Springer and he will playing in his first full season this summer. Springer has 40-20 potential and all-start written all over him. He will be a name to know for all MLB fans.

SPRING STORYLINES - The Astros are an usual mix of veterans and youngsters. The adds of Evan Gattis and Colby Rasmus suggest they are trying to compete this season, while the rest of the roster is slowly getting a chance to mature. This spring they are keeping a close eye on the kiddies to see how close this club really is.

LAST YEAR'S RECORD: 70-92 (4th in AL West)

C Kurt Suzuki
CF Aaron Hicks

PROJECTED ROTATION

Kyle Gibson
Tommy Milone
Ricky Nolasco

PROJECTED BULLPEN
Closer: Glen Perkins
Set-up: Casey Fein

Top Prospect: Byron Buxton (CF)

BREAKOUT - The home-road splits for Kyle Gibson were glaring as the big right-hander was much better in the friendly confines of Target Field. If the 2009 first round pick has a few more strong outings on the road he could easily become the ace of this well-traveled veteran pitching staff.

SPRING STORYLINES - It was an ugly end to a tremendous managerial career for Ron Gardenhire in Minnesota. The only way to replace him is with a Hall of Famer in his first managerial job. Paul Molitor has the tall task of mixing veterans and youngster together and come up with something the is competitive in maybe the most challenging division in baseball this season.

PROJECTED ROTATION

David Buchanan
Jerome Williams
Aaron Harang
Kevin Slowey

*Cliff Lee (60 Day DL)

PROJECTED BULLPEN
Closer: Jonathan Papelbon
Set-up: Ken Giles

Top Prospect: JP Crawford (SS)

BREAKOUT - The second the losses start to pile up more players will be moved. If the Phillies find a suitor for the closer Jonathan Papelbon it will open up the door for Ken Giles to shine. The hard-throwing reliever should build on a strong rookie season and grab double-digit saves for a last place team.

SPRING STORYLINES - The only thing on the mind in Clearwater is who is actually a Phillie, and who is just a trading chip for younger players that can help rebuild a watered-down farm system. Chase Utley and Ryan Howard are shells of their former MVP caliber-selves and every seeing-eye-single brings some hope back into the heart of their loyal fan base. Then they strikeout in their next 10 at-bats and Philadelphia goes back to the Eagles and what Chip Kelly might do next.

BOYS & GIRLS BASKETBALL: All-Area Teams

By Andrew Marcus
Sportswriter for Lansdale Reporter

Here is my annual all-league selections.

The players on these teams displayed their skills in the suburbs of Philadelphia, on teams the four JRC (Journal Register Company) papers covered. The papers are the Lansdale Reporter, Montgomery Media, Times Herald and the Mercury.

These are unofficial all-league selections, just one man's opinion based on what I have seen, read, or heard over the last three months.

Without further adieu...

BOYS
FIRST TEAM
Amir Hinton (Abington)
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Amir Hinton (Abington): What an incredible two years this Ghost had for coach Charles Grasty. He capped off his career with a 1,000 points and a District One championship. When they needed to hit clutch foul shots or a timely three he was the go-to guy. Hinton is going to make some college program very happy. He was an easy pick for Player of the Year.

Dave Krmpotich (LaSalle): The Colgate kid  dominated down low, using his 6-7 frame on both sides of floor. He helped the Explorers make another deep playoff run.

Jimmy Murray (Plymouth-Whitemarsh): Never a shot he did not think he could make, this shooting guard guided the Colonials into the district finals and the PIAA quarterfinals. He was a big part of one of the more dangerous back-courts in the state.

Matt Penecale (Abington): Hinton held the team high in points per game, but Penecale has meant so much to the program over he first years. A point guard that rebound and score, this kid was nearly a triple-double every night and the face and personality of the Ghosts.

Tim Guers (Germantown Academy): A stretch four that added some flavor to the Patriots. Guers can back in with the big men or step out at show his range. All five first-teamers are seniors who had very special seasons.

SECOND TEAM
Danny Long (Pennridge)
Danny Long (Pennridge)
Xzavier Malone (Plymouth-Whitemarsh)
Luke Coonaghan (Archbishop Wood)
Colin Mulvaney (Jenkintown)
Justin Ardman (Methacton)

Danny Duffy (Lower Moreland)
THIRD TEAM
Joe Molettiere (Pennridge)
Danny Duffy (Lower Moreland)
Sam Lindgren (Germantown Academy)
Sean Griffin (Phil-Mont Christian)
Terrell Willis (Christopher Dock)

HONORABLE MENTION
Zach Muredda (Pennridge)
Simeon Fryer (Upper Dublin)
Andre Mitchell (Plymouth-Whitemarsh)
Kit Najee-Walls (LaSalle)
Carnell Harley (Academy New Church)

GIRLS
FIRST TEAM
Nicole Munger (C.B. West)

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Nicole Munger (Central Bucks West): Such an incredible career. She burst onto the scene as undersized, hard working, hustler freshman. Now Munger is on her way to Michigan with a few more inches on her, a diverse skillset and some gold around her neck. Somebody from C.B. West was going to be my Player of the Year. While it could have been any of the three D-1 athletes, I went with Munger.

Bailey Greenberg (Archbishop Wood):  A constant in a year of
turnover and the Vikings still found a way to reach the state title game. New coach, new players, same old standout Greenberg.

Ashley Jones (Cheltenham): Insane to think she just completed her sophomore season and is already over 1,000 points. This guard with a nose for the net is just getting started in the record breaking accolades with the Panthers.

Mackenzie Carroll (Central Bucks West): She is never afraid to let it fly and her clutch shooting has her team with finishing out one of the more memorable season. Carroll carried the Bucks for stretches this season and deserves to be a first-team player.

Deja Rawls (Abington): What a career for the Lady Ghosts, who took her team to the PIAA quaterfinals. Any other season she would be player of the year, but there were a ton of strong girl basketball programs from the area this winter.
Aubree Brown (Wood)

SECOND TEAM
Corrinne Godshall (Central Bucks West)
Aubree Brown (Archbishop Wood)
Keyen Green (Phil-Mont Christian)
Erica DeCandido (Gwynedd-Mercy)
Olivia Gorman (Germantown Academy)

Mikaela Giuliani (North Penn)
THIRD TEAM
Alynna Williams (Plymouth-Whitemarsh)
Leah Simmons (Abington)
Julie Cross (Upper Dublin)
Monica Ervin (Faith Christian)
Mikaela Guiliani (North Penn)

HONORABLE MENTION
Devan Rimmer (Pennridge)
Emma Dorshimer (Jenkintown)
Libby Tacka (Mount St. Joe's)
Ashley Forker (Faith Christian)
Natalie Kucowksi (St. Basil)
