To help pass the time between now and the start of the 2013 PIAA High School Football season I am going to be giving a look at two teams a day. I will give try to call out a few impact student athletes on offense, defense, as well as pinpoint one of the storylines as they open training camp.
Check this blog all season for scores, stats, and predictions, and players of the week...
Head Coach: Steve Devlin
Last year's record: 12-3 (3-0 in AAA Philadelphia Catholic League)
Training Camp Question: With aspirations falling nothing short of a state championship head coach Steve Devlin showed faith in a freshman quarterback last season. Tom Garlick did just enough to keep the Vikings' offense headed in the right direction. And the emergence of Andrew Guckin by season's end also helped the Vikings claim their fifth straight AAA PCL championship. But with Guckin gone, along with many other valuable players, Garlick will garner more of the pressure in his sophomore season. He will most likely have to improve on his 1,000 passing yards and nine touchdowns this season to send the Vikings back to Hershey. Devlin saw something in the signal caller early last year and all signs do point to him becoming a star.
Offensive Standout: Jr. Ryan Bates (OL)
Defensive Standout: Sr. Kendall Singleton (DB)
Breakout: So. Tom Garlick (QB)
Head Coach: Pat Manzi
Last year's record: 1-8 overall (0-4 AA Philadelphia Catholic League)
Training Camp Question: Welcome to the wonderful world of the Philadelphia Catholic League. Where even at the AA level it is no walk in the park. The Royal Lancers and head coach Pat Manzi know what it takes to win in their league and it usually starts with staying healthy. They definitely need to be healthy when the face West Catholic, the usual front-runner, and the constantly improving Archbishop Carroll, Conwell Egan and Nuemann-Goretti. Last year the Royal Lancers were outscored 48-143 in the conference.
Offensive Standout: Jr. Stephen Leach (RB)
Defensive Standout: Sr. Aaron Mitchell (DL)
Breakout: Sr. Gary Meakim (QB)
